The Lord wants to expand you beyond your own borders and your own concepts of yourself.
Because it’s not in our own understanding to know the right way to go—it’s in our relationship with God as we trust in Him, as He broadens our borders, as He expands our tents (Is. 54:2–3), and as He begins to whisper in our ear the destiny, the calling, and the plan He has for our lives as we continue to follow Him.
I love that when Jesus came, He took all of our sin and gave us His righteousness. He shed His blood so that all we have to do is call on the name of the Lord, believe in our hearts, confess with our mouth that Christ is the Lord, and we shall be saved.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
And now we have this journey of discovering this amazing grace that He has called us into.
First and foremost, you must grasp that God’s plan for your life cannot be discovered in your giftings, flesh, or talent. Second, God’s plan for your life is a good plan; it’s a thought-out plan; it’s an amazingly awesome, anointed, and blessed plan. Remember, you’re not a mistake; you were placed in the world at this time and place for a purpose.
How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
That’s an incredible thought: the thoughts that God thinks toward you and me far outnumber the sands of the sea. God has had a lot of time to think about you, to place you in the place that you’re in, and God’s plans for you are better than any plan you could ever develop for yourself.
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
That word “commit” comes from the Hebrew word “galal,” which means “to roll” (Strong’s Concordance).
Let’s say that a blank piece of paper crumpled into a ball represents your life and plans. And let’s say that another piece of paper crumpled around that ball represents God’s will and His plans for your life. That’s what it means to “galal,” “to roll.” It means to completely roll up into another.
This verse is about truly being committed with all your heart to the Lord and being able to say, “Lord, it’s not about me. It’s about You. It’s about what You want for me. It’s about the desires You have for my life—I’m laying this down.” When you do that, you’re taking your life, this piece of paper (the inner ball), and you’re rolling it up into another (the outer piece of paper wrapped over it).
You’re saying, “Lord, I may have a crumpled life, but I’m giving it to You, and now I’m covered by You.” Now the two, which were two pieces of paper, have become one. They’re inseparable. One’s surrounded by and inside the other. So now, wherever I take this outer piece of paper, the inner piece of paper goes. We’re now rolled up in Christ Jesus and we’re committed to Him. Wherever God goes, we go. Whatever He thinks, we think. Whatever He does, we do.
What an amazing concept, being committed!
We’re making that commitment and we’re not backing out. I’m committed to my wife. I have a covenant with her. She’ll never get rid of me. Why? Because I’m committed to her. And that’s the same thing we’re doing in our relationship with the Lord. It’s no longer about us but about the One who lives in us (1 Cor. 6:17 and Gal. 2:20).
It’s a tremendous blessing to understand that it’s not about me being smart enough or talented enough; it’s about me being surrendered to what God has called me to. God has specifically called you, designed you, and placed you in the timeframe in which you’re living right now because He has a plan for your life.
Maybe you’re asking yourself, How do I know what God wants me to do? And how do I fulfill the calling God has on my life?
Surrender your life to Him and dive into the Word. The Holy Spirit will lead and guide you into the truth. You’ll receive provision, understanding, and the empowerment to move forward. You can discover God’s plan for your life and trust Him more and more, and as you lay down your life, you’ll receive more than you could’ve ever bargained for!
It’s not about your plans, thoughts, or abilities. Cast all your cares upon Him because He truly does care for you (1 Pet. 5:7).
